A Rollercoaster Weather Ride

I’m completely fed up with Minnesota weather this year.

The last five days of April high temperatures reached 69 degrees or higher.  Many believed that spring had finally arrived.

Things were drying out nicely, and it would seem that it wouldn’t be long before I could start working on some outside projects again.

But deep down inside I knew better.  I had several nice days when I could have taken the tire chains off the tractor, but I only do that once I’m sure winter is over.  I figured I’d leave the chains on for just a bit longer.

I was bold enough to put my winter coat into its garment storage bag for the year though.

Then May arrived, and by the second the daily high temperatures were dropping again, leaving us with highs in the mid 40′s or lower and lows around or just below freezing.  The winter coat came back out of storage again.

Then not that it hasn’t been a long, cold and crappy enough winter already, but overnight on the 2nd we got hit with another big snowstorm.

Photo on April 29th, followed by May 2nd.

We got 3 or 4 inches of wet snow and missed the brunt of the record-breaking storm.  Nearby Farmington got 8 inches of snow, and a little further south in Northfield, Matt reported that they got 10-12 inches of snow. Southeastern Minnesota got 15 inches of snow, so we should have considered ourselves fortunate.

Instead I just felt resigned that winter might never end…

But by the afternoon of the second, most of the snow at our place was already gone.

But for another kick in the head, early the next morning it started snowing again and when we awoke – surprise! – it was winter all over again.  It snowed off an on for most of that day.

I spent the time cooped up inside working on some computer programming projects and brushing up on CSS to rebuild some websites.

Now most of the snow has melted again and they’re forecasting temperatures in the mid 60′s by next week.

In spite of the progress we had made (several times) towards drying out things, it’s a muddy mess at our place.

The mud doesn’t just make it unpleasant.  I could be putting up some interior walls and drywalling in the new building but I need materials, and until it dries out we can’t really have any trucks deliver building supplies.  I could get the materials myself with my truck and trailer, but between loading and unloading and then dealing with the mud myself figure it’s better to wait.

And for now, the tire tractor chains are staying on.
